(1) The caudex is basically a reservoir for the nutrients stored and not a tool for absorption.(2) Many of the yellow chestnut oak seedlings at this site were actually sprouts from large caudices .(3) Extremely old specimens of Ibervillea sonorae may have caudices up to three feet in diameter.(4) Some species, however, have both rhizomes and caudices .(5) Some caudices lay deep down in the ground, protected from extreme weather conditions and animals.
