(1) Individual choice is constrained by kin group exogamy .(2) Social disapproval of ethnic exogamy is lessening, though the government unofficially discourages it.(3) Male exogamy was slightly higher than female exogamy for the same period and occurred most frequently among third-generation Mexican Americans.(4) These clans maintained strict exogamy , so wives may be brought in from elsewhere.(5) The practice of clan exogamy - or marriage outside of the clan or group - is typical, however, of almost all ethnic groups.(6) Rural communities were exogamous , patrilocal, and patriarchal, with newly married women subservient in the families of their husbands until they had borne sons.(7) Among Chaldeans, most exogamous marriages bring an outsider into the community, rather than resulting in the loss of a member.(8) These subclans are exogamous , and the members refer to each other by using kinship terms.(9) These exogamous marriages introduced the possibility of idolatry and syncretistic practices into the community.(10) Thus, a caste is endogamous, but all the kin-based units below it are exogamous and follow rigid rules about which clans or lineages are allowed to inter-marry.
